Government that my Salary be now increased. I would further request you to bring to His Excellency's notice, that by my office having lately made a Registry Office, and by my now being the sole Collector of Revenue of the Island, a great amount of responsibility has been thrown upon me, which was not contemplated by Sir Henry Pottinger when the amount of my Salary was fixed.

(Signed) A F. Gordon. Surveyor General.

Frederick W. A. Bruce

No. 89.

Sir,

RECEIVED 29th OCT 1844

Land Office, Victoria, (Hongkong) 28th June, 1846

As His Excellency the Governor has pleased to appoint me to undertake the duties of the Surveyor General during his absence on sick leave, I take the liberty of requesting that you will obtain permission from His Excellency the Governor for me to receive the half pay of that officer until his return.

Jam Mare.

I have to state that my appointment as Assistant Surveyor has not been confirmed by Her Majesty's Government at Home, and therefore consider that His Excellency may claim to receive that half pay as additional Salary cannot be entertained.
